May I know you?
Most people are literally scared of this question…..
This question for me usually unlocks a flurry of confusing thoughts in my head. Who am I? What do I say? What can I say? Does he really want to know me? Is this a trick question?
Thoughts of the skeletons in my closet, thoughts of the major highlights of my life at that point in time and finally thoughts of my aspirations for tomorrow. All the while attempting to answer the question in the calmest of tones…..then I get lost before I even begin. I just get lost in the tape. Rewinding to the past, fast forwarding to the future and trying to answer the question at the same time just messes up everything.
I think, that people who have mastered this question have taken out time to reflect and tell exactly who they think they are in a really significant way. Not who they are now, or who they were yesterday, or who they hope to be tomorrow but just simply, taking a holistic approach, spit out exactly what they know themselves to be that cuts across all these paradigms.
Jesus in answering this question gives a very short reply, “I am the Way, the Truth and Life.” He was and is and still continues to be these three things. The Way to the Father, the Truth and in Him Life. This does not mean there is nothing more to Him. In fact, the reverse is the case. There is just so much to know about Him than one is willing to know at a time. But His answer summarized it, His answer invited interest. It is so short and puzzling that if one was really interested, he would need to ask more questions to really know Him.
Now when I think of that question, I know what answer I should give. “There is so much I would like to tell you about me, however, let it be sufficient to say that I am a child of God.”
So, may I know you?
