In Surrender

waving white flag

Hello there!

How are you holding up? I hope everything is going well.

Recently, something reminded me of Jerry in the cartoon Tom and Jerry. Oh the times he called for a truce with his tiny white flag, waving it before the acquiesced Tom in mock surrender. The memory brought a smile to my face and I hope it does for you too.

For this week I want to share very briefly something on surrender or the act of surrendering. There is strength in surrendering, it takes more than an inability to continue in a war to surrender. Most times, the peace we need may just require surrendering instead of picking a fight.  For one bent on fighting, it would take an enormous amount of strength to surrender.

In the case of an offense, surrendering is usually much more difficult than picking a fight, in fact, a fight would be the easiest thing to do. Proverbs 19:11 (AMP) says, “Good sense and discretion make a man slow to anger, And it is his honor and glory to overlook a transgression or an offense [without seeking revenge and harboring resentment].“.

But there is a special class of people whose fight is with the Lord and Job 22:21 (MSG) says, Give in to God, come to terms with him and everything will turn out just fine”. “Give in to God” and “come to terms with Him” points to a discord or disagreement between a person and God, a fight maybe for one reason or the other and usually because we are afraid that trusting or yielding to Him won’t bring anything pleasing. Eliphaz, one of Job’s friends speaking in that bible portion encourages us not to fear because “everything will turn out just fine”.

He continues to say, “Let him tell you that to do; take his words to heart. Come back to God Almighty and he’ll rebuild your life“. Surrendering may just mean you listening to Him, doing what He wants you to do so that He can help you pick up the broken pieces of your life and mend it back together.

When you do this, when you surrender to God Eliphaz continues to say that you will put iniquity far from you, you will lay up gold and silver (wealth) like dust yet your trust won’t be in your riches because the Almighty Himself will be your defense and He will become your delight. And as such you will lift up your eyes to Him in trust and in prayers and He will hear you and you will pay your vows out of your devotion to Him. His light will shine upon your ways meaning He will favor your ways and you will even make decrees and He will make them established. He says when others are being cast down, you will say there is a lifting up and He will save you because of your humility.

I will end with this because I think its an apt way to bring this post to an end. I said in my book Pride that “Misunderstanding between friends usually causes strife and contention between friends but a misunderstanding between you and God will only cause strife and contention within you”. Why would I say that? Because it is the truth. When you are fighting God, the whole struggle and fight is within you. But God, He is just waiting patiently for you to come back to Him hopefully sooner than later.

Like Jerry, you just might need your own small white flag to wave before Him before the day or maybe the new week is over and  I am rooting for you that you will do just that.

Enjoy the new week then!
