Self-confidence? Not of God? Yes, I am of the view that self-confidence is not of God and with the following points of mine. Before that, I want to joyously welcome you again into the month of December! December is that month that carries a lot of mixed feelings. Some are grateful for a successful year while others are wondering what happened to all their goals. Some are gearing up for 2018 with new goals and more determination while others are wondering what the difference would be in order to achieve any goals next year. Well, it’s up to you but if I were you, I would choose to be grateful.
In today’s world, self-confidence has become a must-have trait or quality to be successful. Let me introduce myself, “my name is Bassey Etim and I am blah blah blah and also very self-confident”. I recently used that in an application, LOL. After I took a closer look at that statement, I realized how wrong I was and please let me explain myself.
Self-confidence simply is defined as “confidence in yourself and your own abilities” which really doesn’t seem to hurt anybody but then? A lot of people are depressed and sad and hanging their heads simply because they do not see themselves as having any worthwhile abilities to place their bets on. They see themselves failing in so many areas and they can even count all the areas people have told them they aren’t good in plus the ones they themselves know about. So they jump or fly down buildings and other tall structures because they have seen themselves to be insufficient. Not to mention those that are disabled in one way or the other, what would be their confidence then?

However, the scriptures makes us to know that we are not made to be sufficient in and of ourselves. Our sufficiency is of God. 2 Corinthians 3:4-5 says “And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God”. I love the NIV version of this and it even uses the word “competence”. It says, “Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God”.
Now one of my favorites, Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths”. I love the Amplified bible version of this and it says “Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths”.
Jesus speaking in John 12:49 says “For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak” and John 8:28 says “and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things”. And this is Jesus Christ, God personified, who was given the Spirit without measure still fully dependent on God for what to say and what to do per time. Please permit me to say here that being dependent on God is not and cannot be over rated.
What does God want for us as a trait for success? Joshua 1:6-7, 9: “Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest”. Strength, courage and boldness. Joshua was faced with moving thousands of disgruntled Israelites into the Promised Land after they had just finished mourning Moses who had brought them out of bondage. Was he afraid, yes, but was that going to stop him, no. He went on and with God by His side he fought off all those kings and the children of Israel took possession of those lands. As the Psalmist says, “Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies”.

Are you going to be faced with situations and circumstances that will make you feel like giving up every time you think about them and maybe every day, of course yes but God has said that He would be with you wherever you go. You don’t have to look up to yourself but to Him. It has been recorded that the bible has 365 “fear not” and some have purported its one for every day of the year and may be quite right. Proverbs 28:1 says, “the wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion” and Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah and we look unto Him as the Author and Finisher of our faith. Psalms 34:4-6 says “I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles”.
Poor here meaning of low estate, humble and without abilities. Jesus when He was faced with the cross prayed and cried until His sweat was like blood but an Angel was sent to strengthen Him. “And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground”.
Self-confidence equates self-dependence and being dependent on self is how people become a “god” unto themselves because they find no place for God. In my book PRIDE, more of this is discussed. Luckily for you the book I just mentioned, PRIDE (E-book Version) by Bassey Etim is on a free promotion today (5th December, 2017) on Amazon Kindle Store! And it’s just for today. Be sure to download your copy and when you are done with your reading, I would like to hear from you so please drop a review as you see fit!
I will end with this, the farther you are from God, the more work you have to put in to keep up the façade that you can handle it all by yourself. But someday, He will let you see just how insufficient you are despite what you may be thinking makes up your sufficiency. I hope you don’t delay till then.
Thanks for tagging along to the end. I didn’t plan for it to be such a long one! You have my earnest love and apologies!
