self esteem nexus self-confidence

self-confidence-001

Hi there!

How is the new year going? Great I hope.

Today’s post was a  request made by Mr. Ishmael Frankson, a very good reader of my blog after he read the post self-confidence is not of God. Do check it out to flow with today’s post on “self esteem nexus self-confidence”. His request exactly was for me to “throw more light on self confidence – self esteem nexus” and that is what I will attempt to do today, show the connection if any between these two. I believe other readers like your very good self would be interested in this too after you read the post on self-confidence is not of God.

Related: Self Confidence is not of God

For today’s post, I will be very brief and straight forward.

Now, self confidence we did say from the earlier post is confidence in and reliance upon one’s own abilities, be it ever so insufficient as the case may be. But self esteem on the other hand is distinctly different although many think they go hand in hand. Self esteem I believe is all about a person’s value system. Some questions to ask yourself about your self esteem are what do you value, what are your core values in life that defines what you value and what insults you? What defines/rules your identity as a person, what helps you define the kind of people you esteem, even yourself.  What you esteem is what you value, simple. You cannot esteem so highly in others and even in yourself what you do not value.

Your self esteem is a product of your value system, the presence or absence of the right values. To some persons their job titles define their identity as a person. To many a rich man money defines their value system. A person whose identity he has rooted in his job is likely to feel lowly about himself when he does poorly at work or worse, looses his job and even the bible testifies in Proverbs 10:15 about the rich and they that have money as their value system that the rich man’s wealth is his strong city.

Galatians 6:3 says, “For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself“. David before he became king had this to say about himself when he was asked to marry King Saul’s daughter in 1 Samuel 18:23, “And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king’s son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?” So last question, what makes you look at yourself in the mirror and value/esteem yourself or devalue/look down on yourself, check it and therein lies your treasure and Matthew 6:21 says that “where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”.

Since we are looking at self-confidence in connection with self esteem, a probable question one may ask is “what if my self esteem, my value system is built on my abilities and what I respect in others is their ability to do such and such?” This is where self confidence and self esteem seem to be alike. This is when people are confident and have such good self esteem because of their abilities, being so good at what they do. Well, this is my answer and you may quote me right here, why make your value system, something that should be permanent, based on something or abilities that could come and go? What if you lost that ability that you are held in such high esteem of, that means you won’t be respected any longer as a person and that’s probably why you look down on certain folks. God forbid but accidents happen and people lose certain functionalities, recession happened and lots of people became broke, stock market crashes and so does your self esteem because you founded it on temporary things that today are and tomorrow are not.  Like the grasses of the field, so beautiful are they today but a little bit of excess sunlight and they wither away. Like Jesus advised after the sermon on the mount I advise today, found your self esteem on a rock that no matter the waves of life, the type the song writer says are sorrows like billows when they come rolling, you would have a shelter to hide yourself.

Personally, for me it has been Christ. My value system is founded upon His word. In fact, as a personal testimony I have seen the ups and down of life. I have seen it good and ugly and by experience I have founded my source of joy and hope on something I can say I can’t loose and that no one can take away from me. You can take everything away from me but you can’t take Christ away from me and neither my faith in Him. I have learnt to see and love myself the way He sees me and to see others the way He sees them. He has been my strength when I had nothing to hold on to, He gave me hope and helped me to raise my head among people when things went south. You see, people look down on the poor and downtrodden of the earth and do not esteem them because their value GPS has got it all wrong.

Jesus loved us and gave Himself for us, the Almighty God that made everything and owns the earth and all that is in it including you esteemed us sinners worthy of His beloved Son to die for us and to redeem us. 1 John 3:1, “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God” . God’s value system is LOVE and love has long suffering, is kind, is not proud or puffed up, does not envy, does not seek her own, thinks no evil, rejoices in the truth, is not easily provoked, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things and endures all things. Love covers a multitude of sins and is the fulfillment of the law and when you walk in love you are walking right.

I hope I have been able to do justice to this but if not, let me know your questions and concerns via the comment section for WordPress users and others you can send me an email on my contact page.

What is your value system dear reader? So that this post doesn’t become longer than I expected it to be, let my explanations here suffice for today. If you are not saved or born again please read this post, System Upgrade – Mankind v2.0. I wrote it for you to have an understanding of this very important phenomenon. And when you do understand, just take a knee and say this few words in prayer. Lord Jesus I love you and receive you into my heart, come in and reign as my Lord and Saviour. Make me like You and teach me all that I need to know of You. Help me to walk in the way of life and hold my hands through it all in Jesus name. Congratulations! You have just received your salvation, do find a bible believing church and attend regularly to be taught the scriptures that you might grow.

Thanks for staying with me to the end and God bless you! You have my love and blessings!

Shalom – Peace!
