Be Serious with God!

Yes! Seriously, be serious with God. Okay, let me explain. As a person that desires results, you have to be serious in whatever you find yourself doing. Be it work, your marriage, family, business and even your walk with God. Scriptures say that whatever your hands finds to do, you should do with all your might. That’s because when you take something seriously, others have no choice but to do same. Please, I do not mean being overly obsessed with work and deadlines for today, I mean taking your walk with God seriously.

So what got me started on this? You know the scripture that says “since the time of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of God suffers violence and the violent takes it by force”? Yeah, that scripture as a newly born babe in the Lord always drew my attention and other times confusion especially as it is read in the original King James Version. Let me provide the Amplified Version just in case there remains any lingering confusion with the rendering of the King James Version. It says “And from the days of John the Baptist until the present time, the kingdom of heaven has endured violent assault, and violent men seize it by force [as a precious prize—a share in the heavenly kingdom is sought with most ardent zeal and intense exertion]”

Now am going to try to explain this scripture as I understand it with a phenomenon of the present times. Imagine the rush that happens when a new product enters into the market, especially one that everyone was earnestly waiting for. In fact, imagine a new iPhone is in the market today, you can imagine the rush that will ensue as sales would be enormous. Similarly with all new things, trending things, we get so excited with our new toys (cars, phones, appliances etc) that we fiddle with them all day long until we are tired. Even in new relationships, you both outdo each other in trying to impress yourselves and then its 3 months into the relationship and you that couldn’t stop thinking about brother or sister so and so is now wondering what you really liked about him or her. I think you are beginning to get my point.

Since the times of Abraham, God began to preach the gospel to him, saying in Abraham shall all the nations of the earth be blessed – Gal 3:8 and continued to prophesy through the law and prophets about the coming of Christ and our salvation. Matthew 11:13 says “for all the prophets and the law prophesied until John”. Everyone since Abraham have been awaiting the arrival of Christ. All the way through Abraham to the times of the law and even till the time of the prophets.

Jesus even once told his disciples “But blessed are your eyes, for they see:  and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them;  and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them” – Matthew 13:16-17. And so when John the Baptist came and began to prepare the hearts of many through repentance for the coming of Christ, the Scriptures say that the era of the manifestation of Christ and of the kingdom of heaven had finally arrived. Jesus speaking in Matthew 12:28 said if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come to you. And so with this arrival of the kingdom of heaven and Christ, it was finally fulfilled concerning what was spoken of by the prophets and as a new thing, many pressed into the kingdom, forcefully even violently as the king James says. Thousands were repenting and getting baptized by John the Baptist. Everyone wanted it and struggled to get in.

And then it  happened that a generation came in after those times and rather than be serious and press into the kingdom of heaven for results they have all together become mockers of the faith, lovers of pleasure and of themselves, disobedient to parents, proud, boastful, liars and all manner – 2 Timothy 3:1-5. They have all become too relaxed about the things many struggled for and kept the faith for. I rather not go into our faith’s hall of fame in Hebrews 11 to name names for it is quite a list. Many that gave themselves even to be burned and yet did not receive the promise which is Christ as yet because God did not want them to be made perfect without us (Hebrews 11: 40). These men and women died in faith still believing God and God did finally send “the promise” which is Christ.

                        Related: Am I saved?

Let us begin to end with this; Hebrews 11:6 says “but without faith it is impossible to please him:  for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him”. My emphasis is on the word “diligently!” which means to be persistent and working hard on something. They that seek Him diligently He rewards. Even God demands and respects your seriousness with Him. Solomon killed a thousand burnt offerings to God and God visited him and blessed him in his dream! And am not just talking about material results but more importantly, when you seek Him diligently your salvation is your first and foremost result. It’s not okay to have been saved 10 years ago and now you have so backslidden we can’t recognize you. Your current state is worse says the scripture because after you have tasted of the love of Christ you then backslide, it’s almost impossible to get you back into the faith – Hebrews 6:4-6

According to Dr. James Dobson, hold on to your faith even when it doesn’t make sense to still believe like those heroes of faith who died yet having not received the promise.

Someone reading this you need to take your relationship with God to the next level. If you need to pray more or study the bible more or evangelize more or serve more or be in church more, whatever it is with you then by all means take it up. Let’s get serious with God and He Himself will see and testify of us like He did of Enoch, Abraham, Moses, David, and even Job because His eyes go through the whole earth looking for those whose hearts are perfect, fixed, trusting and relying on Him – 2 Chronicles 16:9.

God bless you as you take your work, family and business seriously even your relationship with God.
