Shift Your Focus

Depressed-001Why you aren’t leaping for joy is simply because your focus is wrong. You are concentrating majorly on the wrong things and you have allowed them to consume your thoughts and to control you. This is why you are currently depressed or often times depressed. I say this with all amount of responsibility because I know what being depressed feels like and not just once but in previous times I had allowed myself drown in it but that was until I found the cure.

Joy or being joyful or to rejoice is not a function of what is happening to you, has happened to you or is about to happen to you – be it things great, good or terrible. Being joyful is a function of a spiritual status and mindset. In Luke 1:44 Elizabeth said to Mary “For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy”.

A six months old baby leaped for joy in his mother’s womb? That could only have been a spiritual response since a baby at that age and inside the womb could not possibly have had any mental knowledge or understanding of who had just walked in or spoken seeing that was also the first time Mary had visited Elizabeth. But by the Holy Spirit, the baby knew that was the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ and leaped for joy for the salvation He was to bring to man. Also, Mary responded likewise. “My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour”.

My joy doesn’t come from my friends, it doesn’t come from my job and it doesn’t even come from my husband. My joy is found in Jesus!

The Movie, War Room

Habakkuk 3:18 says “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation”.

So I say again, your joy is a function of your spiritual status and mindset because when you remember like Habakkuk 3:18 says that the Lord is the God of your salvation, that you have been saved eternally and from every earthly situation He can save you also, you will have no choice but to rejoice in your spirit and in the Lord your Saviour. Why? Because salvation is the best thing that ever happened to man. The good news and the gospel we preach. If that alone can’t make you joyful then it is confirmed that your eyes have shifted from the most important thing which isyour salvation!

If your flesh disagrees with you because of the pain or feelings you may be going through temporarily you do what Colossians 3:2 says. “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth”. You have to set your attention, your mind, your love, your concentration, your eyes and your everything on things above like your salvation, your home on high, the Father’s love bestowed upon you that you may be called the son of God,  the very reason He gave His only begotten to die for you. No one can set it for you so you will have to do that yourself. Remind yourself why your salvation is the most important and keep your eyes on the Lord. The earth will pass away and all that is in it so why allow any of it to weigh you down. Hope thou in God and He will save you says David.

Moreover, Psalms 16:11 says “thou wilt show me the path of life:  in thy presence is fullness of joy”.  In the presence of God is the fullness of joy! Hallelujah! Go get your joy full by spending time in the presence of the Father in worship, prayers and bible study!

I pray God’s grace upon us to focus on what matters most in Jesus name. Amen

    1. You are so right and it is indeed true. It can be demoralizing however if one can be true to self and dig deep, you will almost always come up with the cause of depression. Then recovery would have started. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts on depression. I love you!

  1. I agree with you. Being depressed arises from focusing on the wrong things.

Also being joyful comes from focusing on the right things. And the God news is that each of us has the power to choose which one to focus on.
